Joris van Spaendonck, Van Loon Galleries

Exhibition: Joris van Spaendonck

From Saturday 21 January to Friday 17 February 2023, the idiosyncratic paintings of Joris van Spaendonck can be admired at Van Loon Galleries. Curious? Read on to find out more about the artist and his work.

Joris van Spaendonck (Netherlands, 1967)

Accompanied by his dog, Joris van Spaendonck takes a brisk walk in nature every day. This gives him snatches of images every time. Nature with its trees, branches, flowers, mosses and bark is just a foothold for his work. The ever-recurring play of the seasons, the organisms that make the most beautiful structures on tree bark or moss soil, the splendour of colours on an autumn leaf or, on the contrary, the burgeoning fresh hue in spring. These are elements of nature that continue to fascinate Van Spaendonck enormously.

He takes these impressions in his head to his studio to turn these components into his own idiosyncratic translation. The artist creates his own entity. He would therefore like to invite those viewing his paintings to get very close to his work and discover his, almost natural, organisms in puddles of paint and in deep drawing of his branches and flora. Zo ontdek je dat ‘verf ansich’, het hoofdthema is in het werk van Joris van Spaendonck.
