Glass art

Just as the interval in music is the space between the notes, the spaces between the glass are an essential component in my work.

Frank Biemans initially became known for flat glass objects, but these days he works primarily with the fusion technique in which pieces of flat glass are fused together. The results can be referred to as objects or reliefs, sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract. Often these objects are placed in the (day)light freely in the room or in front of a window. Wall objects are also among the possibilities. In several works he uses color powders and glass granules so that a kind of glass paintings are the result.

The monumentality in his work is strongly reflected in outdoor sculptures, which, because of their structure, shapes and glass thickness, are especially suitable for outdoor spaces. Outdoor sculptures can be either clear or colored (or a combination) and fused elements can be added. Under the influence of sun, rain, frost and condensation, his sculptures seem to change daily.

Frank himself about his work: “Glass as a material presents a challenge for me because of its transparency and unruliness. In combination with the ever-changing (day)light, this transparency produces a fourth dimension, so to speak. Movement, dynamics, rhythm, harmony and space are themes that can be found in my work. Human feelings, sadness, memory, humor, and other qualities are also expressed in my sculptures.”
